The Douglas Shire Historical Society is proud to be part of the Port Douglas Carnivale 2010 and will present a very special “A Piece of Paradise – Vintage Douglas Shire” exhibition at the Port Douglas Court House Museum. Period photos will give a taste of old Port and the former Douglas Shire in its prime vintages.

Ranged along the verandah of the Queensland Heritage-listed Court House Museum, times of wealth and times of disappointment will be illustrated in this unique exhibition.

Once a burgeoning port and outlet for the hinterland goldmines in the late 1800s, Port Douglas declined once the railway terminated in Cairns, and the 1911 cyclone devasted the town.

But Port Douglas rose again to become a simple fishing village, and then the world renowned exotic resort in tropics that we proudly call home.

The Museum will be open on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays between 10am and 2pm. Entry is by gold coin donation.

Volunteers from the Society will be on hand at all times to welcome locals and visitors.

Port Douglas’ love affair with alfresco gourmet dining will be extended fully during this year’s Port Douglas Carnivale (20-30 May) with organisers announcing an all new cuisine event for this year’s program – Palates of Port.

Described as ‘Degustation under the Stars’, the event will see eight of Port Douglas’ finest restaurants and their chefs team up together: Bucci Ristorante; Head Chef – Shaun Malone, High Tide Beach Bistro Bar; Head Chef – Thomas Ahsendorf /Sous Chef – Phil Seely, Salsa Bar & Grill; Salsa Bar and Grill – Head Chef  Goran Zonai, 2 Fish Seafood Restaurant; Head Chef – Tommy Young, Bistro 3; Head Chef – Evan Seaward, Harrison’s Restaurant; Head Chef / Owner – Spencer Patrick and Sam Hiroki, Bel Cibo; Head Chef / Owner – Andy Gray, and Sakinah House Restaurant; Head Chef – Anthony Kramer.

Spokesperson Monique Leman said the event will showcase the exceptionally quality and high standards achieved by the restaurant industry in the region and is expected to become a signature event of Port Douglas Carnivale,

“The giant fig in Rex Smeal Park will be come the backdrop, accentuated with fairy lights, lanterns and up-lights of soft, atmospheric colours to create a magical setting for the eight course dinner. The area will be surrounded with white silk screens and at the base of the fig a small stage will provide the setting for each of the eight contributing chefs to demonstrate, in turn, how their dish is prepared and showcases the local produce which it incorporates. All the action will be displayed on a large projected screen so everyone will be able to see the preparation processes involved,” she said.

The climax of each dishes’ demonstration will be the serving of the dish from the on- location kitchen (built close by but out of view). To complete the menu, a team of local food and wine industry professionals will have matched the best of Australian wines with each of the eight courses.

“In conjunction with the theatre that will be created by the eight chefs demonstrating their dishes, the event will also be managed by MC Tammy Barker to ensure nothing is missed and the evening flows effortlessly,” said Monique Leman. ‘The MC will detail the menu’s dishes, conduct interviews with the chefs as they are working, and manage a program of entertainment during the night designed to enhance the atmosphere of celebration surrounding the event”.

Ms Leman said the evening was not about competition but co-operation between all the contributing chefs and their restaurants to illustrate Port Douglas is one of the best food destinations in Australia.

A new cuisine contest which pitches the master chefs of Port Douglas against each other in a public event for the first time ever has been added to this year’s Port Douglas Carnivale program.

The Carnivale Food Fight will take place on Thursday 27th May, with participating chefs from Bucci Ristorante; Head Chef – Shaun Malone, High Tide Beach Bistro Bar; Head Chef – Thomas Ahsendorf /Sous Chef – Phil Seely, Salsa Bar & Grill; Salsa Bar and Grill – Head Chef  Goran Zonai, 2 Fish Seafood Restaurant; Head Chef – Tommy Young, Bistro 3; Head Chef – Evan Seaward, Harrison’s Restaurant; Head Chef / Owner – Spencer Patrick and Sam Hiroki, Bel Cibo; Head Chef / Owner – Andy Gray, and Sakinah House Restaurant; Head Chef – Anthony Kramer.

A panel of professional industry-based judges, including Sydney celebrity chef Darren Simpson from the Lifestyle Food Channel, Sydney and Neil Hargreaves, Melbourne food publisher, will adjudicate the winner based on a number of criteria including the difficulty factor in preparation, the creative use of a ‘mystery’ ingredient, the skilled execution of the dish, how it relates to current cuisine trends and of course how good it tastes and looks.

Event spokesperson Monique Leman said the Port Douglas Sugar Wharf had been chosen as the venue for the inaugural battle of the region’s master chefs.

“A stage featuring eight cooking stations and a central area will be the focus of all the action. Each station will include a gas burner and a raised work bench for exclusive use by each chef. In addition to the basic equipment each chef is invited to bring with them equipment they think they might want to use in the preparation of their entry. Each station will promote the chef’s restaurant by displaying their brand,” she said.

The central cooking area will be set up to provide easy access for all the competitors to shared equipment including large roll top ovens, deep fryers and Weber Q bbqs. Food supplying sponsors will provide a large larder stocked with a broad variety of ingredients the chefs can access at any time. This larder will be the backdrop to the stage and offer considerable opportunity to show off and promote their wares.

A large projector screen will be hung and a live feed of the action on the stage will be projected throughout the competition, which will provide opportunities for interaction Ms Leman said.

“The doors will open at 6.30pm and give the audience an opportunity to mix and mingle with the competing chefs before the contest starts. Next, the event’s MC Tammy Barker will introduce the judges and the chefs, and reveal two ‘secret ingredients’. The chefs then have 10 minutes to design their two dish menu and gather the produce required from the larder to prepare it. Then the real action will commence, as the chefs launch into preparing their dishes in a 30 minute time period ready for presenting to the judges,” she said.

Throughout, the audience will be entertained with professional and informative commentary on what each chef is doing while they taste a variety of canapés provided by each participating restaurant. The audience will also need to pay attention to the cooking action and end result so as to ensure their ‘Peoples Choice’ vote qualifies them for the door prize draw; two tickets to join the Chef’s Table at the inaugural Palates of Port dinner the following night.

“Once the pots stop flying and the knives are put down, the judges will have 15 minutes to taste the dishes, compare notes and then present their scores to reveal this year’s Carnivale Food Fight Master Chef,” said Ms Leman. “There will then be a period where the chefs can mingle with the audience to celebrate or commiserate the results while continuing to enjoy the evening out on the deck.”

For 10 days during May, the tropical fiesta of Port Douglas Carnivale turns the seaside village into a living postcard of tropical culture.  This year, organisers have added an element sure to appeal to lovers of live music and chilled cocktails fine wine.  The Carnivale Club will operate nightly from 5.00pm till late at the vintage Sugar Wharf right on the waters of the inlet.

The heritage-listed venue will be transformed to a club zone with a swag of free and ticketed entertainment designed to thrill and chill, plus a well stocked bar and supper menu catering for all tastes.  The Club will commence nightly at 5.00pm, with a sunset session for two hours featuring live music and special beverage offers.

Then at 7 pm the mid evening session starts. An array of entertainers are set to appear, with styles ranging from cool jazz, mellow acoustic and chilled sessions by favourite DJs.  Interspersed with the entertainment, organisers plan to inject wine tastings, live cabaret and even comedy acts.  The Carnivale Club will be the venue for the final of the Douglas Songwriters Challenge, plus it will host a new event on the 2010 program, the Carnivale Food Fight which will see several of the region’s master chefs battle it out while their audience judges both their on stage skills and their sumptuous canapes.

The Cairns Adrenaline Film Festival (CAFF) Roadshow will showcase the best entries of this inaugural film competition. This will be an event full of adrenaline packed films made by local and international action sports enthusiasts. Come and see what people out there are doing! Find yourself on the edge of your seat, get inspired or just come and check out some action from the safety of your chair.

The inaugural Cairns Adrenaline Film Festival (or CAFF) is a short film competition to be held on held at Calypsos Backpacker Resort in North Cairns on May 29th 2010. The Cairns Adrenaline Film Festival (CAFF) Roadshow will showcase the best entries of this film competition. This will be an event full of adrenaline packed films made by local and international action sports enthusiasts.

About the competition:

The competition is open to all ages with entrants submitting 4 minute long films that feature adrenaline sports or activities. Numerous prizes have been donated by local extreme sport operators and action sports retailers. The winners of the four film categories will be announced on the night and the films will be played on the big screen in what will be a very entertaining night of action and recognition. Entries are due by May 14th 2010.
The four categories include: 1.) Showcase Tropical North Queensland – the aim of this category will be to showcase this region’s natural wonders while participating in adrenaline filled activities. Around 4 minutes long. 2.) Overall Best Film – this is the Ultimate prize and will be the main prize category for the festival. As long as it still involves the theme of adrenaline and is under 4 minutes in length, any entries are welcome. 3.) The People’s Choice Mad Minute – these films will be judged by the audience on the night of the event. They are to be less than 1.5 minutes long, edited with rapid action clips and pumping music. 4.) Under 18’s Category- this will be the same requirements as the best film category but is reserved for under 18 participants only.
The organiser, Rebecca Scott wishes to encourage anyone who likes watching footage, filming action and editing short films to come along to the CAFF Roadshow. She says that the festival is focused on giving amateurs the opportunity to produce a short film, see it on the big screen and to win worthwhile prizes. Radio Port Douglas, Events NQ and Carnivale proudly presents the Douglas Rock N Blues Bonanza.

The Tropical North’s favourite blues musicians will take the stage during the inaugural Carnivale Rock ‘n’ Blues Bonanza on Sunday 23rd May at Rex Smeal Park, with organisers confirming Johno’s Blues Band (entire line up) Jesse Deane-Freeman, plus The Flying Libido Brothers (formerly Black Label) and Australia’s foremost festival duo Wizard & Oz (Andrew Farrell & David McMillan) will all appear.

The event will be presented by the Port Douglas Chamber of Commerce, Radio Port Douglas and Events NQ, and promises to be a ‘sweet afternoon session of crackin’ music and community cohesion’. Radio Port Douglas’ Michael Gabour, no stranger to producing music concerts after owning the Court House Hotel for many a year, said he agreed to organise the big gig ‘for the music’.

“One of my favourite things about my years at the Courty – apart from the colourful clientele – was the live music we used to present,” said Michael Gabour. “When Carnivale organiser Ken Dobbs called and asked me to produce a concert for this year’s program, I initially declined because my favourite music acts had either disappeared or relocated. On second thought, I said give me 72 hours while I try to get some friends back together!”

Once he put the word out, the answers came back quickly. “Jason from the Court House Hotel agreed to sponsor the first act Wizard & Oz who were regulars at the Court House during my day. It only took Rick Montgomery 48 hours to get the Johno’s Blues Band back together for the second slot. Jesse Deane-Freeman has agreed to come up from Adelaide and reunite with the Rhythm Aces. And it turned out Black Label hadn’t disappeared; they had just morphed into the Flying Libido Brothers. Paul is still on guitar and vocals and Burkie on bass. We are going to re-create some of the magic. And new arrivals to the Tropical North’s music scene who missed it the first time around will have a chance to taste a bit of ‘Vintage Port’” said Michael Gabour.

In a move that will keep the price the public pay for the concert fixed at $10 per head, the concert’s promoters have organised with Events NQ, the producers of the night before’s Food, Wine & A Taste of Port, to use the same staging, lighting and sound as the evening before. “This represents a considerable saving and we couldn’t have planned this event without it because it means we can pay the bands, keep the gate price reasonable, and put on a great concert,” said Michael Gabour.

The Carnivale Rock ‘N’ Blues Bonanza salutes these pioneers and legends of the Australian music scene, and is proud to present this united musical showcase event for Port Douglas Carnivale 2010:

JOHNO’S BLUES BAND

The legendary local line up comprises Johno on vocals and savante guitar, on drums Danny Solo, bass Bruce McKenzie, and second guitar Ric Montgomery, well supported by roadies Kid Ryo and the Reverend Benson. This is the line up that actually made up Johno’s Blues Band for the last 5 years at Johno’s Blues Bar, before the infamous police purge.

FLYING LIBIDO BROTHERS

A mainstay on the Cairns live rock scene for more than a decade, their blend of original, driving rock and classic covers propelled them into the national finals of the Global Battle of the Bands last year. With Mark Burke returning on bass guitar , the Flying Libidos are back to their electrifying best. Mark, together with guitarist Paul Stevens, played together in Cairns’ favourite, Black Label, some years ago. Now with FNQ’s best drummer, Lofty, they will dazzle and inspire with a repertoire ranging from Stevie Ray Vaughn right up to Kings of Leon, as well as originals.

WIZARD & OZ

Andrew Farrell & David McMillan are the Wizard & Oz. Andrew started piano at the age of eight and studied classical music for many years. Since then he has played just about every style of music that he took a liking to. David started playing guitar when he was four and hasn’t looked back. They met on the Mornington Peninsula in 1986 and have been playing together ever since.

Their playlist is enormous including covers and original songs in popular rock, jazz, R&B, blues, boogie and classical music styles. Wizard & Oz are much in demand at music festivals.

JESSE DEANE-FREEMAN

Jesse Deane-Freeman began playing piano at age eight and began playing professionally in 1995. “Jesse Deane-Freeman And The Rhythm Aces” had a long running residency at Johno’s Blues Bar in Cairns where they supported Johnnie Johnson, Little Charlie and the Nightcats, Magic Slim and the Teardrops, Teddy Morgan and Russell Morris among many.

Sadly Jesse Deane Freeman has been forced to cancel his appearance at the Douglas Rock N Blues Bonanza. Happily, the most awesome BEX MARSHALL will be joining us instead!

The quest is on to unmask this year’s Port Douglas Carnivale ambassadors. Organisers of this year’s Miss Carnivale contest are building on the successful format established at this popular event last year, with plans already established to launch this year’s winners at an all out glamour Masquerade Ball at the Rydges Sabaya Resort on 15 May.

Corrine Durie, who puts together the event, said entrants were already coming forward and sponsors were lining up. “It looks like being an amazing pageant this year. Last year was such a wonderful community event, and this year everyone knows what its about and we are enjoying tremendous support so we have decided to go all out with a big ticket event which will be a perfect showcase for these young people.”

Guests attending in masquerade will not be overlooked either. “This gala event will be classy, formal and, in masquerade, it will have just a touch of mystery,” said Ms Durrie. “For prizes, we have dinners for two at our fabulous local restaurants, trips from local tour companies and a couple of surprises for the best dressed, best couple in masquerade and a few spot prizes!” she said.

Bodies in Motion will present a dance extravaganza, Rydges Sabaya are plating up a superb three course meal created by executive head chef Anthony Kramer. This year, the pageant is being judged by a panel of four comprising Eileen Rothwell, features editor at The Cairns Post; Trent Evans, producer/journalist at SEVEN Cairns; Kim Hurley, presenter at Radio Port Douglas; and Doug Ryan, executive officer at Tourism Port Douglas & Daintree.

Ms Durie encouraged anyone considering stepping up for Miss Carnivale and Miss Charity to complete the online registration form. Entry is free and this year there are some great prizes to be won.

Entrants need to be locals, and will undertake guest appearances during the festival of Carnivale, as well as fundraising and gathering donations for the Cancer Council directed to awareness and prevention of breast cancer.

An event for all ages, beginners to expert, the Inaugural Carnivale BMX, Skate and Scooter competition offers all levels of riders and skaters to show off their skills and capabilities in a fun and supportive environment with the chance to win great prizes from PD Bike Works and Compound Skate. Run in conjunction with the Douglas Shire Community Services Association this event is aimed at giving the Youth of Port Douglas, Mossman and surrounds a place to express themselves and will have local judges and a DJ to provide the soundtrack to each rider. Pick up an entry form from PD Bike Works, The Douglas Shire Community Services Association in Mill St, Mossman and the Carnivale ticket office. Parent or Guardians to sign for under 18′s and helmets are required during the competition.
