The Douglas Shire Historical Society is proud to be part of the Port Douglas Carnivale 2010 and will present a very special “A Piece of Paradise – Vintage Douglas Shire” exhibition at the Port Douglas Court House Museum. Period photos will give a taste of old Port and the former Douglas Shire in its prime vintages.

Ranged along the verandah of the Queensland Heritage-listed Court House Museum, times of wealth and times of disappointment will be illustrated in this unique exhibition.

Once a burgeoning port and outlet for the hinterland goldmines in the late 1800s, Port Douglas declined once the railway terminated in Cairns, and the 1911 cyclone devasted the town.

But Port Douglas rose again to become a simple fishing village, and then the world renowned exotic resort in tropics that we proudly call home.

The Museum will be open on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays between 10am and 2pm. Entry is by gold coin donation.

Volunteers from the Society will be on hand at all times to welcome locals and visitors.

The Rainforest Habitat celebrates its 21st Birthday with a fun-filled brunch for all the family! For those that attended the Food & Wine Festival, this also serves as a recovery brunch.

From 10am, guests are offered a welcome champagne on arrival.

Guests are immersed within the Wetlands environment whilst enjoying the cacophony of sounds and colours of wildlife as they wander freely amongst the guests.

Guests are treated to a tropical buffet with a difference. The selection includes fresh tropical and exotic fruit platters, cereals, freshly baked pastries, and of course, Birthday Cake.

Guests can choose from a selection of hot buffet items while the BBQ Chef prepares eggs to order.

Throughout the day there will be interactive wildlife presentations with opportunity for intimate learning experiences with pythons, crocodiles and of course the always-popular koalas. The informative guided tours are an excellent way to discover the hidden gems of each environment. We look forward to celebrating our coming-of-age with you!

2009 Douglas Songwriters Challenge Julatten Heat Entrants, featuring heat winner Bob Maguire third on right.

The Douglas Songwriter’s Challenge is an event designed to encourage local performers both amateur and professional to perform their own original material to a panel of 3 judges. The top 3 amateurs and pros from the 3 regional heats will be asked to perform on the Final night, Saturday May 29th. This event is hugely popular with performers and audiences alike as it provides a rare opportunity to hear original music performed publicly.

Now in its third year this very popular event is back again bigger and better than ever. This year sees the challenge divided into 2 categories, one for amateurs and the other for professional performers. Audiences from previous challenges have been amazed at the local song writing talent and last year saw over 50 entrants performing their previously unheard material. Former winners Rob Hart in ’08 and Danny Ross in ’09 have both had success with their respective performing careers.

Judges are chosen from throughout the shire and different judges are used for each heat, with one judge from each heat scoring the final night. The Douglas Songwriter’s Challenge is open to all age groups and songwriters can play either guitar or keyboard when performing. To help the audience appreciate each song the lyrics are projected on a large screen behind the performers

Entrants: $10 entry fee per songwriter. Instruments and PA provided.

Two Sections: Amateurs and Professionals.

The Rules: Perform one or two original songs to our panel of 3 judges. Your song will be judged on lyrics, melody, structure and originality. (Professionals will also be judged on talent) Amateurs are not judged on their vocal or instrumental abilities but on their song writing skill.

The Challenge: There are 3 heats including the Mossman area, Port Douglas and Cairns. The top 3 scores for each heat category make it into the final night.

Prizes:

Pro’s 1st Prize $1000 cash plus the Songwriters trophy.

Amateurs $500 or Studio time to record the winning song. Other prizes include reef trips and musical equipment for heat winners.

Friday May 14th: The Mossman Bowls club function hall for the Julaten, Mossman and north to the Daintree region.

Saturday May 15th: Salt House for the Cairns region.

Tuesday May 18th: The Tin Shed (the Port Douglas and District Combineds Club) for the Port Douglas region.

Saturday May 29th: The Final, held at Club Carnivale in Port Douglas

2009 Clipper Cup, Port Douglas Carnivale

The Exemplar Clipper Cup Regatta is a six-race series staged over two weekends as part of Port Douglas Carnivale. Vessels compete for the prestigious Clipper Cup, originally raced off Hawaii as an international competition.

Welcome to the Port Douglas Carnivale. For 10 balmy days and nights each May (May 20-30th 2010), the festival of Carnivale takes over the seaside resort village of Port Douglas (Queensland, Australia) offering food, wine, music, culture, fashion, arts, sports, family fun and entertainment… and absolutely every reason you need to head to lovely Port Douglas!

Now 18 years old and recognised as one of the regions principal events, Carnivale has grown from a street fiesta to a broad and diverse program which involves the entire community. Managed by the Port Douglas Chamber of Commerce, Carnivale aims to give locals a chance to celebrate the end of the wet season and the beginning of the busy tourist season, while encouraging regional, national and international visitors to visit and take part in the jocular festivities.

Port Douglas is just an hour’s drive from Cairns via a spectacular coastal road that is surrounded by forest and the Coral Sea and is the proud home to dozens of national award winning restaurants and resorts. It is the only place on Earth where two World heritage listed jewels exist; the Great Barrier Reef and the rainforest of Daintree and Cape Tribulation.  With the seductive May climate, balmy cloudless blue sky days dissolve into tropical evenings with velvet starry skies, giving Carnivale-goers the perfect opportunity to enjoy “A Taste of Paradise”.
