All the gag you can put into drag will be top of the agenda when Karen From Finance arrives in Port Douglas with her Carnivale teaser Out Of Office show.
It’s ‘Reply All’ for the obsessive workaholic who, forced to take time off, has no trouble dragging rapt audiences with her as she embarks on one woman’s hilarious journey of self-discovery and self-annihilation.
Karen’s creator, Richard Chadwick, will bring the award-winning show to the Wonderland Spiegeltent, Dixie Park, Port Douglas on Saturday, May 7.
“She’s been told she has too much leave accrued and doesn’t want to go and ends up going on a wild bender. Then she has to try to get back to the office before work starts on Monday,” Richard said from his home in Melbourne.
Karen’s story of her reluctant holiday misadventures unfolds in classic comedy style, moving between spoken comedy and lip-synching to a mishmash of songs.
“Karen has been around for about nine years now – before the name ‘Karen’ had been tarnished (by the Karen meme, a general purpose criticism of middle-class white women) – and was inspired by the movie Nine To Five with Dolly Parton,” he said.
“It carries a strong message of empowerment for women as well and there is something very beautiful about the story that gets told.”
The award-winning Karen From Finance, with her characteristic big glasses, bigger hair and impossible nails, has featured at finance conventions in the United States and has toured the United Kingdom as well as being a hot ticket in Australia.
Other pre-Carnivale fun includes Akmal’s Best of Akmal – a comedic look at modern day life in Australia – in the Wonderland Spiegeltent on Friday, May 6, and TAKE 3, who will bring their outrageous sass and crass to The Tin Shed on May 18 and 19. Tickets to Karen From Finance Out of Office show, Akmal and TAKE 3 can be booked via www.carnivale.com.au
Joining the two comedians at the Wonderland Spiegeltent this weekend is Kate Ceberano with her Sweet Inspiration Tour on Saturday, May 7.
