Street and Music Festival

CALL OF THE ARTS FOR INAUGURAL STREET FESTIVAL

Port Douglas, 7th May, 2014 – Port Douglas is set to come alive during Port Douglas Carnivale with a week-long dedicated street art and music festival.

Starting at 11am and running until 7pm each weekday (May 19-23) the inaugural Port Village Shopping Centre Street Art and Music Festival in the heart of Marcossan Street will play host to an array of street artists, as well as singers and dancers performing street theatre.

Port Douglas Carnivale general manager Roy Weavers said the festival was a great opportunity to add to the already vibrant atmosphere of the festival.

Musicians will perform jazz, folk, country, rock n roll, modern, acoustic and electric, and students who wish to showcase their talents will have a chance to perform after school and in the evenings.

“The Street Art and Music Festival will create a real buzz in the air with music bringing the inner city to life,” he said.

“We are really excited to introduce this new event and thrilled that the Port Village Shopping Centre has come on board to support the festival in this way.”

All performers will have the chance to compete for the title of Carnivale 2014 Street Performer of the Year, with the title-holder winning a trophy and $1000 cash and the runner-ups receiving a medal, as well as a possible cash prize.

Festival event managers will choose their favourite acts from the week who will then perform on the last Saturday of Carnivale in a Village Market Day Finale where the winner will be announced and trophy and medals handed out.

Event Manager, Nicole Carnaby from Tropical North Theatre Company will be coordinating the festival and she said they were keen for artists to come forward.

“Hidden around the Far North Queensland region are some amazing and diverse talents. We want to see them get involved in the festivities and have a chance to showcase their art,” she said.

The Street Art and Music Festival adds to already busy event-filled week, which includes AFL Under Lights, Modele 14, the Big Laugh as well as a theatrical performance at The Clink Theatre.

Port Douglas Carnivale will also celebrate its 20th Anniversary this Saturday with a formal gala dinner and the announcement of the 2014 Miss Port Douglas Carnivale Ambassador.
